Choosing the Right Tank Type
Tank selection comes down to a few key questions: What fuel are you storing? Where is the tank going? What does the local fire and environmental code require? Here's how the major categories sort out:
- Single-walled steel — lowest cost, requires external secondary containment (concrete dyke or liner). Common in shop and rural farm applications.
- Double-walled — built-in secondary containment, no external dyke required. Easier permitting, smaller footprint, preferred for most modern installations.
- Fireguard (UL-2085) — fire-rated double-walled tanks for sites where fire exposure or impact risk is a concern. Required by code in many urban and high-traffic settings.
- DEF-compatible — stainless steel or specialty polymer required to avoid SCR system contamination. Don't store DEF in standard mild-steel tanks.

Capacity — Sizing Your Tank
A right-sized tank balances three things: avoiding run-outs, avoiding excess capital tied up in unused fuel, and minimizing delivery frequency (each delivery has a fixed cost component). Our rule of thumb: target 2-3 fills per month for steady-state operations, with enough headroom to absorb seasonal spikes without panic deliveries.
- 1,000–2,000 L: small farms, shops, single-piece-of-equipment refuelling.
- 5,000–10,000 L: typical jobsite, mid-size farm, fleet yard with a handful of vehicles.
- 15,000–35,000 L: production farm, larger fleet yard, mid-size construction site.
- 50,000–100,000 L: facility-scale storage, retail fuel station tanks, multi-fleet yards.

Rent vs. Buy — Which Makes Sense?
About half our tank customers buy outright and half rent. The split usually maps to how long the tank will be in use:
- Rent — best for jobsites and projects with a defined end date, transient operations, or trying out a new location before committing capital. We deliver, install, refill, maintain, and remove on demobilization.
- Buy — best for permanent installations like shops, farm yards, fleet bases, and retail stations. Tank typically pays back vs. rental within 18-36 months.
- Lease-to-own — for customers who want to convert from rental to ownership over time. Useful for capital planning.
Compliance & Installation
Tank installations in Alberta need to comply with provincial regulations on fuel handling, environmental protection (CCME guidelines), and where applicable the National Fire Code. Tank standards typically referenced include ULC-S601 for shop-built steel, ULC-S630 for shop-built tank assemblies, and UL-2085 for fire-rated tanks.
We handle the full install — tank delivery, anchoring or pad work, piping to dispensers, vent stacks, overfill protection, and electrical for any pump or monitoring equipment. For sites that require permit drawings or environmental sign-off, we coordinate with your engineer or compliance team.
Pumps, Monitoring, and the Fuel Behind It
A tank is only as useful as the pump on top of it and the fuel program behind it. We supply RAASM transfer pumps, hose reels, dispensers, and fluid handling equipment to match — and we deliver bulk diesel, gasoline, and DEF on a schedule we tune to your tank's usage profile.
For larger tanks or fleet operations, we install remote tank-level monitoring so the next delivery is triggered by actual fuel level, not a calendar date. Card-lock access and per-vehicle usage reporting are available on the same systems for transportation and multi-vehicle accounts.

- What is the difference between Fireguard and standard double-walled tanks?
- Both have inner and outer walls. Fireguard tanks (UL-2085 rated) add thermal insulation between the walls, pass two-hour fire exposure tests, and are tested for projectile impact. Required for sites where fire exposure risk is high — near occupied buildings, fuelling islands, or in dense urban settings. Standard double-walled tanks meet most rural and industrial code requirements at lower cost.
- Can I store DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) in a regular fuel tank?
- No. DEF is a urea solution that corrodes copper, brass, zinc, and unprotected mild steel — and any contamination from those metals will damage your fleet's SCR systems. DEF must be stored in stainless steel or DEF-compatible polymer tanks. We supply both.
- Do you handle the installation, or do I need a separate contractor?
